Tools
The Tool Library’s previous website had a cluttered menu, confusing user flow, and lacked visual identity and hierarchy.
Improvements:
Bring color and branding to the forefront
Simplify the menu categories to streamline information
Make user flow easier to access all services
Design Challenge
old website
Lacking personality and consistency with spacing and text treatment
Conflicting hierarchy of information
The layout is not optimized for legibility- centered text and composition are visually hard to follow.
Research
The ethos of this organization needs to shine brightly throughout the website. Their mission is counter-culture and aims to be accessible to all so the design approach must reflect those values. Navigation and information should be clear, direct, and visually enticing. The site should be an accessible resource for all who need it. The copy/language used should be revised to be concise and recognizable.
Solution
Consolidating the top navigation into manageable and actionable categories. Create a pathway for all types of users- newcomers, people who use the library, class-goers, and open shop participants. Each goal should be accessible within no more than 3 clicks.
The mission and brand should be integrated into all aspects of the design and set the tone for the experience participants have with the library as a whole.
Old Site
Bold color was introduced to add visual interest and be more brand-forward.
By making headers, titles, and paragraphs more defined, a visual and information hierarchy is established.
Images and animations evoke a sense of space and community.
The menu is simplified and the navigation is dispersed throughout the site to make the site purpose more defined and user-friendly.
